June 12, 2019 (Gainesville, Fla.) On Wednesday, June 12, 2019 CareerSource North Central Florida (NCFL) partnered with CareerSource Florida Crown to host a large-scale hiring event for Mortenson Construction, a national firm that specializes in the construction of large scale solar and wind power projects. The event took place from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM EST, at the CareerSource NCFL Career Center in downtown Gainesville.
Participants began arriving for the event as early as 6:00 AM, traveling from across the state and outside of it, some from as far as Texas and California. By 11:30 AM EST event attendee counts were estimated at 200, with a line still growing out the door.
Advertised jobs ranged from manual labor to management, including positions for Craft Safety, Electrical Apprentice-Solar, Electrical Journeyman-Solar, General Labor-Solar, Heavy Equipment Operators-Solar, Inventory Specialists-Solar, Mechanics, and Solar Operators with wages starting at $14 an hour.
According to Mortenson Talent Acquisition Specialist Matthew Ehrenberg, who represented the event, “The solar power sector holds tremendous potential in Florida. We’re talking about thousands of jobs all over the country, but the Sunshine State is obviously a key market for us.”
He added, “Hiring quality candidates is instrumental to building the workforce we need to do this exciting work, and noting the turnout for the event, we’re excited to continue working with CareerSource North Central Florida in the future.”
Dr. Jeffrey Tate, Chair of the CareerSource North Central Florida Board, explained that this event strongly embodies the organization’s vision: a world-class workforce that meets the needs of business and provides opportunities for job seekers today and into the future.
“We’re proud to partner with a firm like Mortenson who is ready to invest in hiring Floridians from across the region in well-paying, high-tech energy economy jobs,” said Dr. Tate. “Adding current skills in renewable energy and solar energy to a person’s resume means they will have relevant and dynamic prospects in a changing workplace.”
CareerSource NCFL facilitates hiring events for Alachua and Bradford counties. Because positions were advertised for a solar farm project in Trenton Florida, CareerSource NCFL worked in partnership with representatives at CareerSource Florida Crown (serving Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist and Union counties) to host the event. According to CareerSource NCFL Executive Director Frank Avery, events like these demonstrate the essential nature of partnerships between workforce boards and employers.
“Hiring events are an essential part of staffing, but they can be a lot of work while you’re running a company. That’s where we come in. From crafting job listings, to vetting and screening candidates, to setting up interviews, we’re proud to say that we make the process as efficient as possible, that way our employers can focus on their business. The benefits of an event like this are multiplied when we can partner with another workforce board like CareerSource Florida Crown, because it ensures that Mortenson has the full resources to hire even more Floridians and keep jobs here in our two regions.”
314 total people attended the Mortenson event, resulting in over 150 conditional offers for employment.
