June 2019 Jobs Numbers Released

Gainesville — CareerSource North Central Florida Executive Director Frank Avery today announced that the Alachua and Bradford County unemployment rate was 3.4% in June, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. The regional labor force was 147,082, up 875 available workers over the past year.

In June, CareerSource NCFL assisted 619 businesses hiring for 355 available positions. Businesses posted 121 jobs over the last month. More than 3,191 Alachua and Bradford counties residents were assisted at the Gainesville and Starke career centers. Employment in education and healthcare positions grew by 400 jobs year-over-year.

Mortenson Account Acquisition Specialist Matthew Ehrenberg, who hosted a June 12 hiring event at CareerSource NCFL’s Gainesville Career Center, noted the quality candidates he received while recruiting in the Gainesville area. “In a specialty field like ours, you not only need skilled technicians and workers, but a lot of them. CareerSource NCFL not only brought us the right people for the job, they also hosted one of the best events we’ve ever had. It was well-attended, efficient, and extremely organized.” 314 total people attended the Mortenson event, resulting in over 150 conditional offers for employment.

The Department of Economic Opportunity also provided more economic indicators for the Gainesville MSA (Alachua and Gilchrist counties), including:

  • Nonagricultural employment in the Gainesville MSA (Alachua and Gilchrist Counties) was 142,200 in June 2019, an increase of 1.4% from a year ago. In June, the Gainesville MSA (Alachua and Gilchrist Counties) saw the biggest growth in professional and business services; trade, transportation, and utilities; and government.
  • The Gainesville MSA (Alachua and Gilchrist Counties) over-the-year growth rate in government was tied for the third highest annual growth compared to all the other statewide metro areas in the industry.
  • The Gainesville MSA (Alachua and Gilchrist counties) gained 2000 jobs over the year, led by professional and business services (+700 jobs). Other major industries gaining jobs included government (+700 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+400 jobs); education and health services (+400 jobs); and mining, logging, and construction (+200 jobs).
  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource NCFL region (Alachua-Bradford County) was 3.7% one year ago. The region’s jobless rate was down 0.3 percentage points over the year.
