Silicon Valley does it, Austin does it, Gainesville does ‘IT’, too

Downtown job fair allows employers, job seekers to display talent

Little big things are happening in Gainesville! Gainesville has long been a home for great ideas. Add in our world-class talent and connected community, and we are a nucleus for innovation in the world of startups.

Start Up Downtown is the first exhibition of its kind to come to Gainesville. With a focus on students and technically skilled job seekers interested in joining the emerging Gainesville startup culture, it also provides local startups the chance to show off to the community.

On Thursday, July 18, the second floor balcony of Union Street Station, 201 SE 2nd Ave., will transform from a business walkway to a downtown hot spot for startup companies recruiting talent. The event runs from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Attendees will be able to meet and network with representatives from local startups. In addition to the job fair area, the event features live demos by HackerHouse cadets and open house of Grooveshark and Fracture. Start Up Downtown is going mobile with the networking app Feathr, another local startup. Feathr also allows attendees to have all event information in the palm of their hands.

Event sponsors include Capital City Bank, Institute for Workforce Innovation, Shadow Health, Mobiquity, and OwnForce. Nearby businesses Vellos, 101 Downtown, Relish, Emiliano’s Cafe and Half Cork’d are offering extended specials for the event. McGurn Investment Company will validate parking in the SE 2nd Avenue garage for attendees.

All attendees are encouraged to register at EmployFlorida.com in advance to view job descriptions of participating employers. There also will be a registration area at check-in for the event. Attendees can also access event information at FWStartUpDowntown.eventbrite.com.

It is not too late for businesses and startups interested in participating. Contact Shareen Baptiste at Shareen@GainesvilleChamber.com to sign up today!
